Time is ripe for EU to hold Russia to account

Kristiina Ojuland, an MEP in the Liberal group in the EU parliament and Estonia's former foreign minister, writes in an opinion piece in EUobserver that an ever-growing segment of Russian society has become disillusioned with President Vladimir Putin's regime and has found renewed courage to speak out. The article says that a combination of repression and radicalisation could easily see political stagnation degenerate into instability. It is therefore time for European leaders to be a plain-speaking friend to Russia and to point out that prosperity and stability can only be guaranteed in the long-term by freedom and democracy, with a primary focus on ensuring Russia's compliance with its existing commitments.
