Putin’s tightening grip will turn out to be his undoing

In an opinion editorial in The Times Sir Tony Brenton, British Ambassador to Moscow from 2004 to 2008, argues that President Vladimir Putin’s tightening grip will turn out to be his undoing. Putin has problems. In an administration where almost everyone has something to hide, infighting can take on fratricidal dimensions. And while Mr Putin retains majority support, he is losing the elite. The more nastily the regime behaves, the more it alienates the better part of the Russian population.
