Putin’s Games

An editorial piece in The Times says that the Winter Olympics in Sochi poses serious questions about President Vladimir Putin’s presidential style and strategy. If he wants Russia to face towards Europe then he must enact appropriate policies. Turning the Olympics into a help-yourself jamboree for business magnates is not the right signal. Under Mr Putin the Russian economy has deepened its dependence on oil and gas exports. The oil revenue has bought the illusion of political stability, in all but the North Caucasus. It has also rotted the will for reform and modernisation.
