Obama team admits failure on Russian reset

A blog post in The Washington Post by conservative commentator Jennifer Rubin says that the US President Barack Obama’s team has admitted its failure on the Russian “reset.” After more than a year of deteriorating relations, the administration now envisions a period of disengagement, according to government officials and outside analysts here and in Washington. The “new” policy is to withdraw and do nothing, which is better than aiding and abetting President Vladimir Putin’s internal crackdown, but shirks the country’s responsibility to try to influence Russia is a positive way. Given that Mr Putin’s wealth, and in turn his power, is largely dependent on oil and natural resources, the article argues that the US should redouble its efforts to establish energy independence.
