The Kremlin starts punching

European Voice publishes an article by Edward Lucas, International Editor of The Economist, highlighting the recent bullying tactics carried out by the Kremlin in a bid to assert its influence over its neighbours and quash the EU’s diplomatic efforts. The article recommends that the EU should use two tools at its disposal to put pressure on Russia, referring explicitly to late lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, Gazprom and Hermitage Capital CEO William Browder. It also says that European countries should begin imposing visa sanctions and asset freezes against those involved in the death of Magnitsky, as well as show political support to Browder. Lastly, it is suggested that the European Commission should file the complaint it is preparing against Russia’s abuse of the European gas market and expose Gazprom to fines.
