Russia’s accession to the WTO: a new phase in EU-Russia trade relations?

Event date:
Wed, 06/27/2012 - 12:30 to 14:00

Russia will complete its long accession process to become a WTO member this summer. This course of action will undoubtedly have a strong impact on the global economy, and in particular the EU. How will the EU react to Russia’s presence in the WTO? Will membership finally allow EU producers and operators open access to Russian markets? Will it allow Russia to diversify away from its dependence on natural resources and develop its manufacturing and service industries? From a multilateral point of view, can Russia’s accession provide a boost to an under-performing WTO whose importance continues to dwindle in the face of multiple bilateral deals?

Speakers include:

Peter Balas – Deputy Director General, Directorate-General for Trade

Robert Sturdy – Member of the European Parliament, Vice-Chair of Committee on International Trade

Arancha Gonzales Laya – Chief of Staff for Pascal Lamy, Director-General of the WTO

Held in Brussels, the discussion will be moderated by David Clark, Chair of the Russia Foundation. We would be delighted if you were able to join us for this event.
